Saturday, November 11th, 11:11am - Richmond, CA (269 16th St, Richmond, CA) - Save-the-Bridge Ride - The bike lane on the Richmond-San Rafael bridge is a lifeline that makes low-carbon, and non-polluting bike commutes and trips into the North Bay possible from the East Bay. RSVP here.

The #BikeBus reminds you of how much good there is

The #BikeBus reminds you of how much good there is in the world. Part of the fun is you don’t know what kind of bike bus it’ll be until you ride it. But we usually see friends, friends see other friends, kids get to move, chat, and socialize. And we all roll into school as a giant parade.

Friends from soccer, preschool, after care, neighbors, or just bike friends. We love this community.

I have so much praise for what the City of Alameda

I have so much praise for what the City of Alameda has done to build a protected cycle path across nearly the entire island. It’s great for recreation, but we are riding to take our kid to soccer games. Being able to commute on separated paths is a game changer. It feels much calmer, and we get to ride by parks where we see kids playing. We get views of the water and San Francisco, and can easily stop by Firebrand or Almanac for post-match food, coffee, and beer.

Fun spontaneous adventure day on the bike. We rode

Fun spontaneous adventure day on the bike. We rode to soccer along the new section of the Cross Alameda Trail. It’s protected and a huge improvement. Amazing. Had a fun soccer game and then we took the Alameda Water Shuttle back to Oakland. We checked out Dogfest by @canineorg and watched the costume contest. Then we rolled uptown and came across Honoring Our Ancestors with @e14gallery and @civicdesignstudio510

We got a flat on the way home but weren’t too mad about it because we’d been having fun. And all adventures have their ups and downs.

I just compiled our sticker tally results and there’s a clear downward trend in the number of students actively transporting themselves to school.

Half the school walked to school in 2021, and now only a quarter of the school does. These walks have been replaced by a near equal number of car trips. Is this a good trend?

My guess is that fewer kids are walking due to parent concerns about safety and because of convenience/time with return to the office post-lockdown. Have demographics changed so more students live farther away than before? Is it something else? If it’s due to safety and convenience, why did planners build an environment where it doesn’t feel safe or convenient to walk and roll? 😕
