Niles Canyon Stroll and Roll bike ride photo

The Niles Canyon Stroll and Roll is fantastic even if your kid has a hard time

https://youtu.be/48J_lMO9VlQ Niles Canyon Stroll and Roll The Niles Canyon Stroll and Roll is a biennial event (every OTHER year) on Niles Canyon Road aka Highway 84. (This means there is no Niles Canyon Stroll and Roll 2024. The next one will probably be in 2025 but there’s no confirmation yet as of this writing. The Niles Canyon ride and roll is attended well enough that it looks like it’s been around for a long time, but it turns out that it’s only been in operation since 2015.  It operated on odd numbered years until 2021, when it was postponed because of COVID. This led to a Niles Canyon Stroll and Roll in 2022, and another one in 2023 for back-to-back years.  It was kind of a tease since there won’t be one in 2024 :(. The event in 2023 was […]

Ranier Cherries at G&S farms in brentwood

U-Pick Cherry Picking by Bike in Brentwood (2023)

This year we rode our 3rd annual bike ride to Brentwood, California to visit G&S Farms to go cherry picking in Brentwood. Our original ride to cherry picking was great, and we’ve wanted to continue the tradition every year. Getting there isn’t very easy by transit, but it can be a neat multimodal trip from Oakland and other parts of the East Bay. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qbpQBpZXD0U&feature=youtu.be   Cherry Picking by Bike in Brentwood 2023 – Some stuff was different than years past. BART Bus Bridge This year, due to track work that was being done on the BART tracks between Rockridge BART and Orinda BART, there was what they call a “Bus Bridge” between stations.  There was no direct train service, but there were free courtesy shuttle buses at both Rockridge and Orinda stations. This is normally a bit of a hassle, […]

Dirt World in Richmond - fun bike rides for kids in the bay area

Kids Bay Area bike rides: Dirt World in Richmond

Kid Bay Area Bike rides: Dirt World Bike Park in Richmond I decided to take a different route home after teaching a bike class that ended at Richmond BART, and headed to Dirt World in Richmond (4 21st St, Richmond, CA) to check it out. I’d heard for a while now that it was a fun place to take kids to ride on some dirt and do some small jumps. But I hadn’t had the chance to go. (here is their Facebook page, which appears to be their main information hub) Dirt World was finished in 2018, 4 years after Dennis Hoskins II and Jasmin Malabed conceived of the idea and led construction. They wanted to build a place for their son and other kids to practice BMX skills and mountain biking. Construction companies donated dirt, and a large group […]

A bag of cherries in a pannier.

Cherry picking (and other U-Pick fruit picking) in Brentwood. A successful 20-mile adventure by bike!

April to May to June is U-Pick cherry picking season in the Bay Area When I was a child, I remember apple picking in New England with my dad.  My memory is fuzzy now and I don’t remember if we just went once, or multiple times, but I still remember climbing a ladder to pick, and watching cider presses.  I was confused when the cider came out brown when apple juice wasn’t.  It seemed odd, but I still enjoyed drinking it. There’s so much locally grown produce in California, and I wanted to create a similar experience for our family.  Especially after friends at a picnic shared some of their u-pick cherries with us. Last June, we went cherry picking at a u-pick farm in Brentwood for the first time.  Brentwood is the place to go for cherry picking in […]
